| Obverse description | Draped and diademed bust of Herod of Chalcis facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic royal portrait tradition. The effigy displays curly hair beneath a narrow diadem, with drapery visible at the truncation of the bust. A circular Greek legend surrounds the portrait in the field, reading ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΗΡΩΔΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΚΛΑΥΔΙΟΣ, identifying the ruler as King Herod, Friend of Claudius. The die work is characteristic of provincial Judaean bronze coinage of the mid-first century CE. |
