Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troadensis — granted under Augustus, which gave it the right to produce autonomous bronze coinage using Latin legends, an unusual privilege for a Greek-speaking city in Asia Minor. Severan-era issues from this mint are notably inconsistent in fabric; the flans were often poorly prepared, and off-center strikes are the rule rather than the exception. A well-centered example commands immediate attention for that reason alone.
