Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta — founded by Antigonus and later refounded under Augustus, which gave it the unusual right to mint bronze coinage using Latin legends at a time when most eastern provincial mints used Greek. The COL AVG TROA legend reflects that colonial status directly. Commodus's issues from this mint cluster in the early 180s, immediately following his accession after Marcus Aurelius died in March 180.
