Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony founded by Antigonus around 310 BC and refounded by Lysimachus, eventually receiving full colonial status under Augustus. Its coins from the Severan period are notable for depicting the famous local sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus at Chryse — but more practically, the colony's mint was unusually productive under Caracalla, partly because the city served as a major embarkation point for troops crossing into Asia Minor. Military traffic meant coin demand, and the Alexandria Troas mint answered accordingly.
