Reverse description A large dolphin depicted in dynamic profile, swimming to the right, set against a plain field. The dolphin is rendered with naturalistic detail, its arching body and tail fin clearly articulated. The Greek civic legend ΠΕΡΙΝ / ΘΙΩΝ is arranged in two lines around the dolphin, divided above and below, enclosed within a dotted border. This reverse type alludes to Perinthus's status as a prominent Thracian coastal city on the Propontis.

Additional information

Perinthus, on the northern coast of the Propontis, was one of Thrace's most strategically placed cities — a fact exploited by every power from Philip II of Macedon to Rome. By the mid-first century AD, the city operated under provincial Roman administration but retained the right to strike its own bronze, a privilege that reflected its commercial weight as a transit point between Europe and Asia. RPC I 1766 belongs to a loosely dated Julio-Claudian horizon, the attribution refined primarily through die links and the absence of imperial portrait types rather than any firm documentary anchor.
