To the right of the bust appears the forepart of a horse, a symbol connected with Mithraic iconography and local cult practice. The encircling Greek civic legend identifies the issuing authority of Trapezus. The reverse composition reflects the strong indigenous religious traditions of Pontus under Roman imperial rule. |
