Sinope, a Roman colony on the Black Sea coast, retained its colonial status and distinctive CCI (or variant) colony numbering well into the imperial period — the date formula encoded in the reverse legend tracks the city's own colonial reckoning, not the imperial calendar, making these bronzes unusually precise chronological documents for a provincial issue. The CCIIII figure places this piece in a tight window of Marcus Aurelius's reign, before the full weight of the Marcomannic Wars redirected resources and attention away from Pontic civic life.
