| Reverse description | The lunar deity Mên stands facing, head turned to the left, depicted in military attire with a Phrygian cap and crescent at the shoulders. In his right hand he holds a pine cone, while his left hand grasps a tall sceptre resting at his side. The Greek civic legend ϹΑΡΔΙΑΝΩΝ Β ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ is distributed around the figure in the field and exergue, proclaiming the twice-neocorate status of the city of Sardis. The reverse type reflects the strong local veneration of Mên in the Lydian region during the Severan era. |
