| Beschrijving keerzijde | Standing figure of Zeus Kataibates facing left, depicted in a dynamic pose with one arm raised and the other holding a long sceptre or thunderbolt; an eagle is visible at his feet. The deity is rendered in the traditional Hellenistic manner appropriate to the cult of Zeus Kataibates ('the Descender'), the principal civic deity of Cyrrhus in Syria. The surrounding Greek legend ΔΙΟϹ ΚΑΤΑΙΕΒΑΤΟΥ ΚΥΡΡΗϹΤ identifies both the deity and the issuing city of Cyrrhus. The reverse field shows the characteristic coarse but expressive engraving style of this Syrian provincial mint, with some flatness of strike at the periphery. |
