Viminacium was the legionary fortress of Legio VII Claudia and the administrative capital of Moesia Superior, elevated to colonial status under Gordian III in 239 AD — the AN dating system on these coins counts from that colonial foundation, making AN IIII correspond to the fourth year of the colony's existence. The city's mint operated for roughly three decades before closing, producing one of the most systematically dated provincial bronze sequences known from the Roman world.
