The imperial effigy displays the paludamentum over the cuirass, with drapery folds rendered in low relief. The encircling Greek legend occupies the field around the bust, naming the emperor with his full titulature. The flan shows characteristic surface roughness consistent with hammered provincial production. |

Elaea was a minor Aeolian port city whose civic coinage under Gordian III was administered through the Pergamene conventus — the Roman judicial district centered on Pergamum that handled provincial affairs for a cluster of smaller Asian cities lacking the resources or status to operate entirely independently. The magistrate name ϹΕΒΗΡΟϹ recorded on this issue is one of the few surviving pieces of evidence for local civic administration in Elaea during the 3rd century.
