Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted three-quarter from the front. The imperial effigy displays military attire with paludamentum over the cuirass, rendered in the provincial style typical of Ephesian civic coinage of the mid-third century AD. The Greek imperial titulature legend runs around the periphery of the flan.

Reverse description Tyche, the personification of Fortune, standing to the left in full figure, clad in a long chiton and himation. She holds in her extended right hand the distinctive cult statue of Artemis Ephesia, the multi-breasted goddess of Ephesus, and in her left hand a cornucopia symbolising abundance. The Greek civic legend is disposed in the field around the figure, identifying the issuing city and the deity depicted.
