Reverse description Asclepius, the god of medicine, stands facing right with head turned to the left, his weight supported by a serpent-entwined staff (kerykeion-style iatric staff) held in his right hand. The figure is rendered in a static, frontal-leaning posture characteristic of provincial bronze coinage from Ionia under the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus. The surrounding Greek legend names the presiding strategos Pankrates, reflecting the civic magistrate coinage practice common to cities of the Smyrna conventus. The surfaces show a heavy patina of green and reddish-brown consistent with prolonged burial, with the legend partially legible around the periphery.
