The Koinon of Thessaly — a federal league revived under Roman provincial administration — retained the right to strike bronze coinage through much of the imperial period, a privilege that carried more symbolic than economic weight by the third century. The joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus, which began in 253, was the last period during which the Koinon issued coins under co-emperors, and provincial minting across much of Greece effectively ceased within a generation as the so-called "crisis of the third century" collapsed the infrastructure supporting it.
The Δ in the legend denotes a magistrate's initial rather than a denomination, a convention specific to Thessalian federal coinage.
