The magistrate named in the legend — a strategos serving his second term at Pergamum — places this issue within a civic minting tradition that the city jealously maintained throughout the imperial period. Pergamum had been the first city in Asia to receive permission to establish an imperial cult, under Augustus, and its civic bronze issues carried that prestige forward for generations. The strategos eponym system meant each issue was tied to a specific officeholder, giving modern researchers a rare chronological anchor that most provincial bronzes lack entirely.
