The cuirass is adorned with a gorgoneion at the centre of the breastplate, a characteristic decorative element on imperial military portraits of the Severan period. The deity holds his characteristic attribute, a knotted serpent staff (the Rod of Asclepius), in his right hand, with the serpent coiled about it. The figure is rendered in the conventional Hellenistic manner typical of provincial Phrygian bronzes of the Severan era. The ethnic legend of the issuing city encircles the reverse field. |
