| Beschrijving keerzijde | A monumental city gate rendered in frontal view, featuring three arched entrances of graduated height, the central arch being the tallest, flanked on either side by a square tower with battlemented parapets. The architectural composition rests upon a raised base or stylobate, and the whole is rendered with careful detail typical of civic pride coinage from Nicopolis. The Greek legend ΙΕΡΑϹ ΝΕΙΚΟΠΟΛΕωϹ, meaning 'of sacred Nicopolis', is distributed in the field and around the design, proclaiming the sacred status of the city founded by Augustus to commemorate his victory at Actium. |
