The goddess is depicted in a flowing garment, her figure occupying the central field in the characteristic style of Carian civic bronzes. The encircling Greek legend ΑΦΡΟΔΕΙϹΙΕΩΝ identifies the issuing city. The type celebrates the special relationship between Aphrodisias and its eponymous deity, a theme consistently exploited on the city's coinage throughout the Imperial period. |

Aphrodisias held an unusual status among Anatolian cities during Gallienus's sole reign — it had been granted freedom and immunity from Roman taxation by Augustus himself, a privilege repeatedly confirmed by successive emperors and fiercely guarded by the city's council. Local bronze issues of this period reflect that civic pride, struck under municipal authority rather than provincial oversight. The city's close identification with Aphrodite gave it leverage in imperial negotiations that few communities in Caria could match.
