Magnesia ad Maeandrum had a long habit of courting Roman favor — the city had sided with Rome against Mithridates in the early first century BC and was rewarded with formal recognition of its temple of Artemis Leukophryene. This civic bronze names Gaios as the issuing magistrate, a Greek rendering suggesting a local official who adopted Roman nomenclature, a not uncommon accommodation in the conventus cities of Asia during the Augustan reorganization of the province.
