Tomis, on the Black Sea coast of Moesia Inferior, was elevated to metropolis of that province sometime in the 2nd century — a status this coin's reverse legend explicitly advertises. The designation carried administrative weight, not merely prestige, entitling the city to preside over the provincial koinon and host its assemblies. Ovid died there in exile roughly a century before these bronzes were struck, still petitioning Augustus's successors for recall.
