The creature occupies the central field, rendered in low hammered relief. The encircling ethnic legend ΛΑΜΨΑΚΗΝΩΝ in Greek letters identifies the issuing city. The hippocamp was a longstanding civic emblem of Lampsacus, referencing its maritime identity on the Hellespont. |
