| Reverse description | A winged hippocamp advances to the right, depicted in the archaic local tradition of Lampsacus as a mythological sea-creature combining the forequarters of a horse with a fish-tail body and outstretched wings. The creature occupies the central field, rendered in low hammered relief. The encircling ethnic legend ΛΑΜΨΑΚΗΝΩΝ in Greek letters identifies the issuing city. The hippocamp was a longstanding civic emblem of Lampsacus, referencing its maritime identity on the Hellespont. |
