Canatha, one of the cities of the Decapolis, issued bronze coinage under Caligula during a period when the region sat under the administrative grip of the client kingdom of Nabataea before its eventual absorption into the Roman province of Arabia in 106 AD. Municipal issues of this kind were not struck by Rome's authority but by the city itself, functioning as a local economic instrument within a patchwork of semi-autonomous urban minting traditions common to the Syrian interior.
The city reckoned dates by its own civic era beginning in 31 BC, placing this issue firmly within year 69 of that count.
