Patras was refounded as a Roman colony by Augustus around 14 BC, resettled with veterans from the Praetorian cohorts and soldiers discharged after Actium — men who had fought the battle that made Augustus's reign possible, rewarded with land on the very coast where the war concluded. The colonial coinage that followed was among the earliest struck in Achaea under Roman auspices, making RPC I 1280 one of the foundational issues of the new provincial order in Greece.
