Syracuse's Fourth Democracy was a turbulent interlude between the death of Agathocles in 289 BC and the rise of Hicetas, during which the city briefly expelled its mercenary garrison — the Mamertines — before losing control of the broader Sicilian interior entirely. Coinage from this period was struck under civic rather than dynastic authority, a rare window in Syracuse's otherwise tyrant-dominated late history.
The Mamertine crisis that bookended this democracy would eventually draw Rome into Sicily for the first time, though that consequence was still a generation away.
