Cranii was one of four principal cities of Cephallenia, and its bronze coinage of this period reflects the island's position as a minor but independent maritime power in the Ionian Sea. The city maintained enough civic autonomy to strike its own bronze well into the Macedonian period, despite Cephallenian communities frequently shifting allegiances between Corinthian, Athenian, and later Macedonian spheres of influence.
