The date ΕΤ ΡΠΘ — year 189 of the Pontic era — places this issue in 186/187 AD, during a period when Amasea was actively promoting its civic status. The city held the title of metropolis of Pontus, and the elaborate titulature crammed into the obverse legend reflects competitive civic honorifics that Pontic cities pursued aggressively under the Antonines. Neokoros status and the right to strike bronze were not automatic; they required imperial approval and were frequently contested between rival cities.
