| Obverse description | Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted in the Roman imperial style. The effigy is rendered with characteristic third-century portraiture, showing the youthful emperor with a radiate crown. A circular Greek legend surrounds the bust, reading ΑΥΤΟΚ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ, identifying him as Autocrator Caesar Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sebastos. The flan is irregular and slightly rough, typical of provincial bronze coinage struck at Edessa. |
