Thermai Himerensis was founded by Carthage around 407 BC on the site of destroyed Himera, resettling survivors of that city after its brutal sack. The town passed to Roman control following the First Punic War and continued issuing bronze civic coinage into the second century — a striking degree of municipal autonomy for a Sicilian community under Roman provincial administration.
CNS 17 is among the later issues in the Thermitan sequence, struck as the city's independent coinage tradition was winding down.
