The Ganja Khanate occupied an awkward political position in the 1770s — nominally under Persian suzerainty but geographically wedged between Ottoman and Russian ambitions in the southern Caucasus. Coinage struck in the name of Karim Khan Zand reflects the Zand ruler's consolidation of Iranian authority following the collapse of Afsharid power, with peripheral khanates like Ganja required to acknowledge his overlordship through the mint. Karim Khan never took the title of Shah, styling himself only Vakil al-Ru'aya — regent of the subjects — and that deliberate modesty is embedded in the coin's very authority.
Ganja's mint output from this period is sparse and poorly documented in Western references, which accounts for the relatively recent catalog assignments.
