Nader Qoli — not yet the shah he would crown himself in 1736 — governed Khorasan as a military commander under the Safavid Tahmasp II and then Abbas III, effectively controlling the region while maintaining the legal fiction of Safavid suzerainty. Coinage struck at Mashhad during this interregnum period was issued in the name of the reigning Safavid puppet, but Nader's political grip on the mint was absolute. The Mashhad mint held particular strategic weight given the city's position as both a Shia pilgrimage center and a transit point for eastern trade routes.
The Type A designation distinguishes these from later issues struck after Nader's formal accession.
