Grossgstötten is a small Upper Austrian municipality, and this 90 Heller Notgeld is one of the more arithmetically awkward denominations produced during the early 1920s Austrian emergency currency wave — a value chosen almost certainly to satisfy specific change requirements at the local level rather than any standardized system. The Gemeinde issued these notes under the authority granted to Austrian municipalities when the postwar collapse of the crown made small coin effectively disappear from circulation.
