Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, comprising the traditional escutcheon with five bezants arranged in a cross pattern and a border of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown rendered in high relief. The denomination '80' appears to the left of the shield and the date is split across both sides, with '17' to the left and the final two digits to the right. The circular Latin legend reads JOSEPHUS I D G PORT REX E B D, proclaiming José I as King of Portugal and Lord of Brazil by the Grace of God.
