Eidenberg is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 80 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld emergency that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. With the postwar Habsburg successor state in monetary freefall and small coins effectively vanished from circulation, thousands of local authorities — including parishes with populations well under a thousand — were legally permitted to issue their own temporary scrip. B. Langhammer in Linz handled printing for a number of Upper Austrian communes during this period, making them a regional workhorse printer of the phenomenon.
The 80 Heller denomination is slightly unusual; most issuers favored round figures like 10, 20, or 50 Heller.
