Eckartsau sits on the Danube floodplain east of Vienna, and in late 1918 it served as the final Austrian refuge of Emperor Karl I before his exile — he signed his withdrawal from state affairs there in November 1918. The municipality issued this 80 Heller note two years later as a Notgeld, part of the wider Austrian emergency local coinage phenomenon driven by the chronic small-denomination coin shortages that plagued the new republic through the early 1920s.
The 80 Heller denomination is an odd one — most Notgeld series favored round figures — suggesting the municipality was deliberately plugging a specific gap in local change.
