Denomination numerals '80' appear in circular cartouches at the upper left and upper right corners, flanked by the word 'Heller' in Gothic script, with the subtitle 'Kaiser Karls letzter Aufenthalt in Oesterreich' arching above the vignette. Eckartsau sits on the Danube floodplain east of Vienna, and in late 1918 it served as the final Austrian refuge of Emperor Karl I before his exile — he signed his withdrawal from state affairs there in November 1918. The municipality issued this 80 Heller note two years later as a Notgeld, part of the wider Austrian emergency local coinage phenomenon driven by the chronic small-denomination coin shortages that plagued the new republic through the early 1920s.
The 80 Heller denomination is an odd one — most Notgeld series favored round figures — suggesting the municipality was deliberately plugging a specific gap in local change.
