Comments

Gutenbrunn-Heiligenkreuz was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities that issued Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. This 80 Heller denomination is an unusual figure — most Notgeld ran to round or half-round values, and the 80 reflects a calculated local need rather than a printer's default. Grők in St. Pölten handled a number of Lower Austrian municipal issues in this period, and Hofecker's design work appears across several of them.

The two signatories — the Bürgermeister and a Gemeinderat member — gave these notes their legal standing under the municipality's authority, thin as that authority was in monetary terms.
