This piece belongs to a commemorative series issued by the Spanish mint revisiting historical coin types in fine gold — the 100 pesetas of Alfonso XIII being one of the more politically loaded choices, given that the peseta itself was abolished in favour of the euro just three years after this coin's release. Alfonso XIII's reign ended with his voluntary exile in 1931 following municipal elections that swung heavily republican, making his coinage a deliberate reach back across the Franco era and the entire democratic transition.
