Christian VIII authorized billon coinage for Schleswig-Holstein through the Altona Mint as a practical concession to the dual monetary reckoning of the duchies — the Rigsbankskilling denomination satisfying Danish accounting while the Schilling Courant value addressed local Hamburg-influenced commerce. Altona, just west of Hamburg, operated as Denmark's secondary mint precisely because of its proximity to that trading hub.
1843 fell at the tail end of relative political calm in the duchies; within five years the First Schleswig War would erupt, and Danish monetary authority over the region would become a live question rather than an administrative formality.
