| Obverse description | Draped laureate bust of King Charles IV facing right, occupying the central field of the coin. The Latin legend CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA surrounds the effigy along the periphery. The date 1802 appears in the exergue below the bust. Superimposed on the lower portion of the bust is the oval insurgent countermark of Villa Gran, bearing the incuse legend VILLA GRAN within a beaded border, applied during the Mexican War of Independence to authenticate or validate the coin for insurgent use. |
