Obverse description The obverse displays three applied countermarks over the host coin's original design: a Type A Morelos monogram countermark consisting of an ornate cipher enclosed within an oval border and flanked by stars; a Type A Chilpanzingo countermark depicting an arm grasping a bow; and a ZMY countermark. The underlying host coin retains partial elements of the laureate bust of Ferdinand VII and the surrounding Latin legend, typical of the 1809 Mexico City mint issue. The countermarks were applied by insurgent forces during the Mexican War of Independence to authorize the coin's continued circulation.
