Surrounding the effigy is the legend FERDIN • VII • DEI • GRATIA, with the date 1820 positioned in the lower exergue. A toothed border runs along the inner rim. Prominently applied over the king's portrait is the Spanish colonial Philippines countermark — a small oval punch depicting a royal crown above the cypher Y•II• (for Isabella II), validating the coin for circulation in the Philippine archipelago between 1834 and 1837. |
