Obverse description The obverse displays the laureate and draped bust of Ferdinand VII facing right, rendered in the neoclassical style typical of Mexican colonial coinage. The circumferential legend reads FERDIN • VII • DEI • GRATIA with the date 1821 in the lower exergue. A Philippine countermark — comprising a crowned oval cartouche bearing the cypher Y•II• (for Isabel II) — is applied to the lower left of the bust, over the truncation area. The coin's milled border is well defined, and the overall field retains the characteristics of a fully struck Zacatecas milled issue.
