Real de Catorce was a silver mining town in the mountains of San Luis Potosí, and its brief coinage of 1811 was entirely a product of insurgency pressure. As the Hidalgo revolt destabilized normal supply chains to the Mexico City mint, royalist authorities in isolated mining regions began striking emergency coinage locally to pay troops and maintain commercial function. Real de Catorce was one of the most productive silver sources in New Spain, which made it both a strategic prize and a logical candidate for improvised minting.
The municipal authority here had no established mint infrastructure. Output was limited, and the coins show it.
