Obverse description Crudely hammered silver field with a heavily convex, essentially blank central area surrounded by an inner beaded circle. The peripheral legend, struck in bold raised capital letters between the beaded inner border and a milled outer rim, reads ELR•D•CATORC•POR FERNA•VII• 1811, identifying the issuing municipality of Real de Catorce acting in loyalty to King Fernando VII. The date 1811 is incorporated into the legend. The primitive, emergency character of the strike is evident in the irregular surfaces and uneven letter spacing, typical of provisional wartime coinage produced during the Mexican War of Independence.
