Fernando VII never set foot in Spanish America, yet coins struck in his name circulated across the region for over a decade — the result of Napoleon's forced abdication of the Spanish Bourbons in 1808, which created a prolonged constitutional crisis that left colonial mints producing coinage for a king who was, for years, a French prisoner. Guatemala's mint had operated since 1733, one of the few authorized colonial houses outside Mexico and Lima, and its output during this period carried unusual political weight as loyalty to the captive king became the nominal justification for royalist resistance to independence movements gathering across Central America.
The series spans the entirety of Fernando's contested reign through 1821 — the same year the Central American provinces declared independence from Spain entirely.
