The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped with a banner inscribed PLUS and ULTRA respectively, symbolizing the Spanish overseas empire. The peripheral legend HISPAN • ET IND • REX • surrounds the design, with the mint mark NG, denomination 8R, and assayer initial M also present in the legend.
