The 1742 Bogotá 8 reales falls within the macuquina (cob) coinage tradition — hand-struck on irregularly shaped planchets — that colonial mints maintained long after European practice had moved toward milled coin production. Spain repeatedly attempted to mandate milled coinage in its American mints, and Bogotá (then Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino de Granada) was among the most resistant to conversion, finally completing the transition only in the 1750s.
Felipe V died in July 1746, making 1742 a mid-reign issue with no transition-year ambiguity. Bogotá cobs from this period are notoriously irregular in strike placement, and full assayer-initial legibility is the practical grading threshold collectors apply to this series.
