Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned quartered royal shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León in alternating quarters, surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The shield is surmounted by an open royal crown rendered in relief. A partial Latin legend encircles the periphery, reading PHILIPVS V D G M VIII, though much of the lettering is partially visible due to the irregular flan typical of cob coinage of this period. The overall die work is characteristic of the macuquina (cob) style produced at the Nueva Reino mint.
