Felipe V reclaimed the Spanish throne in 1724 after a brief, voluntary abdication in favor of his son Luis I — but Luis died of smallpox after just seven months, forcing Felipe back. The Bogotá mint had only recently been reestablished under royal authority following decades of administrative turbulence, and these cob-style macuquinas from 1721–1722 belong to the earliest phase of that reconsolidated operation. Quality control was inconsistent; the assayer marks on this series are among the least standardized in the mint's colonial output.
